I am a writer and dramatist, a published playwright, poet, and novelist. My drama has been produced by BBC Radio, on the stage In the UK and Australia. My second collection of poetry is due out In June of 2021. My second novel Baghlan Boy, was published In September of 2020 and follows the journey of an eleven-year-old Afghan boy from Baghlan to the UK and his life thereafter. I researched the novel in part by Interviewing Afghan migrants to the UK in the north of England. I also read extensively about the country.
As a dramatist I have worked extensively in youth and community theatre, particularly with refugees. Last year I was commissioned by Sky Arts to write and direct a large-scale community play on the English Civil War. I was writer in residence in a young offenders Institution from 2007 to 2012 and wrote a criminology text book, Behind the Lines, on using drama and writing with offenders.
I have taught creative writing at both Edge Hill and Sheffield Hallam universities. You can find out more about my work at my website, michaelcrowley.co.uk
